The best time to visit Notre-Dame
- Weekdays at opening (7:50–9:30 am): short lines and soft morning light through the south rose window.
- Thursday evening (7–10 pm): the late opening is the calmest moment of the week, and the stained glass glows as the light fades.
- November to March: the shortest lines of the year, except during the Christmas holidays.
- Avoid: 11 am–4 pm on weekends and public holidays from April to October, when the walk-in line can exceed an hour.
A free time-slot reservation takes care of most of the wait: see our step-by-step reservation guide.
Mass times and services at Notre-Dame
Notre-Dame is first and foremost a working cathedral, the seat of the Archbishop of Paris. Anyone can attend Mass, free and without booking. Here is the regular schedule published by the cathedral:
| Day | Mass | Other services |
|---|---|---|
| Monday–Friday | 8:00 am, 12:00 pm, 6:00 pm | Rosary 3 pm, Vespers 5:30 pm; Eucharistic adoration Thursday evening |
| Saturday | Similar to weekdays (check the official calendar) | Confessions during the day |
| Sunday | 8:30 am, 10:00 am (Gregorian chant), 11:30 am, 6:00 pm | Lauds 9:30 am, Vespers 5:15 pm, free organ recital 4 pm |
To attend Mass, join the line at the central portal (the Last Judgment portal) about 20–30 minutes before the service; ushers will guide you to the seats reserved for worshippers. On the first Friday of each month (and on the Fridays of Lent), the Crown of Thorns is presented for veneration in the afternoon. Christmas, Easter and the Assumption (August 15) draw huge crowds: arrive very early.
Is there a dress code at Notre-Dame?
There is no strict written dress code like at St. Peter’s in Rome, and nobody checks your knees at the door. But it is a place of worship, so the cathedral asks visitors to dress and behave respectfully:
- Avoid beachwear, very short shorts and plunging or sleeveless tops; a light scarf for your shoulders is a good idea in summer.
- Men are asked to remove hats and caps inside.
- Keep your voice down; announcements remind visitors regularly. Phones on silent, and no flash during services.
- Food, drinks (except water) and smoking are not allowed.
Security, bags and facilities
Everyone passes an airport-style bag check. Suitcases and large backpacks are not accepted and there is no cloakroom: leave them at your hotel or a luggage storage nearby. Glass bottles, knives and sharp objects are prohibited. There are no restrooms inside the cathedral: the closest are public toilets around the square, including free automatic toilets on Rue d’Arcole. The cathedral is wheelchair accessible through a dedicated entrance, without reservation; the towers are not.
Walking from the Eiffel Tower is one of the loveliest strolls in Paris: about 4.5 km (2.8 miles) along the left bank, past the Musée d’Orsay and the Pont des Arts. All the options are detailed in our guide to the area around Notre-Dame.
