Since the cathedral reopened in December 2024, « Notre Dame reservations » has become one of the most searched travel questions about Paris, and the answers online are a mess of paid ticket sites, outdated rules and half-truths. Here is the situation in October 2026, checked against the cathedral’s and the Centre des monuments nationaux’s own pages.
Do you need tickets for Notre-Dame?
No. There is no entry ticket for the cathedral itself and there never has been. The building belongs to the French State and is used by the Catholic Church for worship; French law guarantees free access to cathedrals for visitors as well as worshippers. What changed after the reopening is the crowd management: with around 11 million visitors in 2025 (30,000 to 35,000 a day), the cathedral introduced an optional free reservation system to spread arrivals across the day.
So the real question is not « where do I buy tickets? » but « should I reserve a free slot, and how? ». For most visitors the answer is: reserve if you can, and do not worry if you can’t.
How to book the free Notre-Dame reservation, step by step
Go to the official site or app
Use notredamedeparis.fr or the official « Notre-Dame de Paris » visitor app (iOS and Android). These are the only places that issue the free cathedral reservation.
Pick a date within the booking window
New slots are released about 72 hours ahead, often just after midnight Paris time (6 pm Eastern / 3 pm Pacific the day before). Extra slots are added during the day as people cancel.
Choose a time slot and group size
One booking covers a small group (up to 6 people). Your reservation is valid for a short window after the slot time, so plan to arrive on time.
Keep the QR code on your phone
Show it at the reservation line on the parvis (the square in front of the cathedral). Security screening still applies to everyone.
No reservation? Here is how the walk-in line works
The walk-in line forms on the parvis and is clearly signposted. In our experience it moves fast: 10 to 30 minutes most of the year, sometimes an hour or more on summer weekends between 11 am and 4 pm. Three ways to cut that wait without paying anything:
- Go at opening time (7:50 am on weekdays): you can often walk straight in.
- Go on a Thursday evening, when the cathedral stays open until 10 pm and the day-trip crowds have left.
- Avoid weekends and public holidays from April to October, the busiest period.
Visitors with reduced mobility do not need a reservation and use a dedicated accessible entrance. More timing advice in our guide to Notre-Dame opening hours and Mass times.
What actually costs money at Notre-Dame
| Experience | Price (Oct 2026) | Where to book | Worth it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cathedral entry | Free | Optional free slot on notredamedeparis.fr | Always |
| Tower climb (424 steps) | €16 adults; free under 18 and for EU residents aged 18–25 | tickets.monuments-nationaux.fr only | Yes, if you can climb stairs |
| Treasury (relics, liturgical objects) | €12 | On site, inside the cathedral | For history and art lovers |
| Archaeological crypt (under the square) | About €10 | Paris Musées, on site or online | Good rainy-day add-on |
| Guided tour of the cathedral | From about €30–€60 per person | GetYourGuide and other platforms | Best way to understand what you see |
| Official audio guide | A few euros | In the official app | Good budget alternative to a guide |
The towers are the only part of Notre-Dame where an advance ticket is truly essential: tickets are sold online only and sell out from April to October. Everything you need is in our Notre-Dame tower tickets guide.
Free entry or guided tour: which should you choose?
Walking in on your own is free, and the official app gives you a decent audio commentary. But Notre-Dame is a dense building: three portals full of biblical scenes, three rose windows, a rebuilt roof and choir you will only understand with explanations. A good guide turns a 30-minute walk-through into the highlight of your trip, and many tours include the outside story of Île de la Cité and the restoration.
- Worth it if…
- You want the stories behind the portals, rose windows and the 2019 fire
- You are short on time and want a plan that works first time
- You’d like to combine Notre-Dame with Sainte-Chapelle or the Conciergerie
- Think twice if…
- You are on a tight budget: the free entry plus the official app does the job
- You mainly want to pray or attend Mass (no tours run during services)

Reservations for Mass, concerts and special days
You do not need a reservation to attend Mass: worshippers enter through the central portal shortly before the service. Free organ recitals on Sunday afternoons also need no ticket. Evening concerts, on the other hand, are ticketed and sell out quickly. On major feasts (Christmas, Easter, the Assumption on August 15) the cathedral is extremely busy, and visiting hours can change: check the official calendar the week before.
When do Notre-Dame reservations open?
Reservations open on a rolling basis, about two to three days ahead of each date. There is no way to reserve weeks in advance, and no official « early access ». If you see a website offering cathedral reservations months ahead, it is not the official system. Planning a trip around a specific day? Secure your tower slot or a guided tour weeks ahead, and treat the free cathedral reservation as a last-minute task.
